The most important thing to do concerning your brakes is: listen. If you hear a grinding sound when you apply the brake, there’s a possibility you’re coming due for brake service.
The grinding could be due to excessive dirt on your brakes, but it’s also a warning built into the brake pads to tell you that they are getting to the point where you need to replace them.
Another sign you should get your vehicle in for brake service is excessive black “dirt” on a wheel that isn’t on the other wheels. This can be a sign of problems with the brake on that wheel.
Because your vehicle has built in safety systems that transfer braking to the other wheels, you might not notice the problem while you’re driving in normal conditions. It could, however, become a big problem on slippery roads where every ounce of braking control is needed.
Brake Fluid
The only other maintenance that most drivers need to do is keep an eye on the brake fluid level. Usually the reservoir for brake fluid is under the hood right in front of where the driver sits.
If you notice that your brake fluid is a little low, you can refill it with the proper brake fluid (there are two different types, be sure to use the correct one) or bring it in to us at Tires Tires Tires.
If you refill it yourself, be sure to check it again in a day or two and make sure you aren’t leaking brake fluid – a sign you need brake service right away.
