Serpentine Belt - Replace
Many under-the-hood components like your alternator, air conditioning compressor, power steering, and water pump all get their power from the engine by way of the serpentine belt – an extremely long belt that winds its way, like a serpent, around various pulleys at the front of the motor.
An improvement over fan belts
Early cars used a series of “fan belts” to run each of these components. If the one closest to the motor broke, all of the other belts needed to be removed to gain access to replace the one. At some point, an engineer decided it would be better to create one very strong belt and run everything from it rather than a stack of lower quality belts.
Other parts to check: belt tensioners
In addition to the pulleys for the components, there are one or more belt tensioners – free turning pulleys that have springs so they keep the belt taught. These belt tensioners or their springs can wear out and need replacement.
