Cooling System and Radiator Service
Have you noticed a puddle under your car? Or perhaps the temperature warning light has come on.
If so, it’s a sign that your cooling system has a problem.
What the cooling system does
Your engine creates a lot of heat in the process of burning the gas that makes the engine turn. To keep it from melting down, a coolant is pumped through the engine to collect heat and then pumped through the radiator to release that heat into the air.
As a side benefit, the hot coolant is also run through the car’s heater to provide warm air to riders in cold weather.
Major parts of the cooling system
The cooling system includes the radiator, car water pump, thermostat, the cars heater, and car hoses.
Possible problems
The most obvious is a leaking radiator or car hoses that allow water and antifreeze to leak onto the floor under your vehicle. The car water pump can also develop a leak. The obvious solution is to replace or fix leaking radiator, car hoses or car water pump.
Since the antifreeze that is mixed with the water in the cooling system keeps the water from boiling and allows it to reach temperatures above the boiling point, the system become pressurized and can leak out of hairline cracks to components or splits in hoses.
The radiator cap is actually a pressure relief system and its failure can cause your temperature light to come on.
But another hidden problem can happen:
corrosion to the insides of the radiator.
A complete radiator service can be done to clean the insides of the radiator, fix leaking radiator, and check it for pressure leaks.
Often, radiator service can prolong the life of the radiator and keep your vehicle running cooler at a lower cost than replacing the radiator.
