Uniroyal
One of the 12 original companies on the Dow Jones Industrials, U. S. Rubber was started in 1896 when a number of smaller rubber companies merged. Over the years, all sorts of rubber related businesses were part of the company, including Keds, the company that originated the “sneaker” shoes.
Tiger Paws
U.S. Rubber was renamed Uniroyal in 1961 and became one of the top tire brands in the country. They were very active in the “Muscle Car” era with the iconic “Tiger Paw” line of road gripping tires advertised with an animated tiger/car character. Tiger Paws are still one of the major brands for Uniroyal.
The Uniroyal Giant Tire
Another icon of the tire industry came from Uniroyal, the Uniroyal Giant Tire was a featured attraction at the 1964 Worlds Fair. It was a Ferris-wheel ride that looked like a tire. Standing 8 stories tall, it’s the largest tire model ever built.
After the fair, the tire was moved to Detroit where it still stands today (minus the Ferris-wheel) along I-94 near the airport. It’s been remodeled a number of times to resemble the latest tire innovations from Uniroyal. Today Uniroyal Tiger Paws are still with us, although they’ve transitioned into all-season radials with the latest technological advances.
