Remember the penny test? You probably heard about it when you first started driving.
The idea was that you could see if your tires still had a useable amount of tread by sticking a penny in the groove of the tire with Lincoln’s head facing down. If the top of his head was hidden behind the tread, you tire was still useable.
New research indicates Lincoln isn’t good enough
Recently, industry research on tire stopping power indicates that you should pull out a quarter instead of a penny. If the tread is deep enough to hide the top of Washington’s head, it could make a 100 feet difference in stopping distance in wet conditions.
